This wiki is intended to help identify radio signals through example sounds and waterfall images. Most signals are received and recorded using a software defined radio such as the RTL-SDR, HackRF, BladeRF, Funcube Dongle, USRP or others.
Anyone can edit this wiki, so if you see missing or wrong information please feel free to...
correct it by clicking the 'edit' button at the stop of the signals page. When doing an edit you will be asked to answer a very simple spam prevention question which will appear at the top of the screen after clicking on Save page.
You can also discuss the signals by using the discussion tab at the top of every page, or just by using the comments box at the bottom of this page.
If you would like to contribute an example signal, please contact me at rtlsdrblog @ gmail.com and send a waterfall image, sound or small IQ sample and any information about the signal that you have. Note that it will probably take me 1 - 3 months to get to your signal. If you want to add a signal yourself please consult the instructions here - Adding An Example Signal. Don't worry too much if you mess up the wiki syntax, i'll eventually patrol all the pages and fix them up if something is wrong.
Software: There is now the Artemis software available which can be used to display the known reference signals in an easy to access offline format.

Thursday morning, three years after our first contact in Iran, members of the Rockall Dx Group will be leaving Brussels at 12 o’clock local time. Flying to Teheran (via Moscow) where we have to change airport for the domestic flight to Kish Island AS-166. We have 30 fully packed suitcases filled with radio equipment and antennas. Radios will be carried as hand luggage which leaves about 6 kg of personal stuff for each operator.

We expect arrival on Kish island January 16th early morning. As soon as we have approval from the local police we can start building antennas. Priority will be lowband TX. 40m four-square and Hexbeams setting up the equipment in the shack is planned after sunset. EP6T will probably be going on air early morning of January 17th, but remember that we have not been sleeping for 36 hours at that time! Lowband RX antennas and 10m yagi will go up during the next day. We will be off air for a few hours to finish the station setup.

There will be two groups of 5 people operating in 4 hour shifts, around the clock. Again we want to ask people in Europe and Asia for your cooperation when we have propagation to North America, since this is the most difficult path on all bands. Listen to the operators instructions, and we will all be enjoying the pile ups.

There has been some deliberate QRM on 80 meters during the last months, the EP6T operators are aware of this, so turn your VFO away from the QRM and maybe you will find us calling a little bit below or above our announced frequency.

On Top Band we may be listening 1803 – 1810 for NA if EU/AS signals are causing too much trouble. Again, listen to the operators instructions.

We would like some signal reports from NA on 10 and 160m. Please send these reports via ep6t@rockall.beso we can adjust according to propagation openings. We will have daily updates from our pilots. If you want to know the best time to work us, use the link to K6TU on our website. When we have internet access you will find pictures, updates and the online log as well. Don’t forget the donate button which gives you a free QSL card for your QSO with EP.

Social media is covered by Bjorn, ON9CFG, twitter #EP6T and on Facebook.

We would like to say a big “THANK YOU” to Dr Fard, Mrs. Mortazavi and our assistants in Iran helping us getting EP6T on air, without them this expedition would not be possible.

The Rockall Dx Group

Morse Decoder decodes Morse code characters through the built-in microphone of your Android device.

Morse Decoder can be used by Ham Radio operators or anyone else interested in decoding Morse code from a Radio or any other device.

Morse Decoder includes a “waterfall” to show a frequency spectrum of about 50Hz to 2300Hz. A narrow band DSP filter can be set for the frequency of the Morse code tones by tapping the waterfall. The DSP filter is followed by an automatic gain control (AGC) to compensate for changing signal strengths.
The detected signal will be shown as a graph and several algorithms will then detect the speed of the Morse code and convert them into readable text. Speeds of less than 4 Wpm (Words per Minute) to more than 50 Wpm can be decoded.
Morse Code Decoding:

Place your Android device against the speaker of the radio or the device which transmit the Morse code. If there is a tone present the waterfall will display a blue or white vertical line (As stronger the signal as brighter the line) Slide the red rectangular on top of the vertical line. Even though Morse Decoder uses a 200Hz wide AFC (automatic frequency control) it is recommended to move the slider always on top of the vertical line. It may take several initial characters containing both dots and dashes before the WPM speed estimation acquires the actual Wpm and decodes the characters correctly.

Lock Speed:
Morse Decoder will constantly determine the speed of the Morse signs. In very long breaks it is possible that Morse Decoder will detect the wrong speed. The next couple of characters could be decoded wrong. After Morse Decoder detected the right speed it is recommended to push the “lock speed” button. Morse Decoder will lock the speed and will not attempt to change the decoding speed.
Some advice:

To improve the performance it is recommended to place the device directly against the speaker of the radio or the device which transmit the Morse code. Morse Decoder still decodes Morse code when the device is not directly placed at the speaker but several effects like phase interference due to echo’s or background noise can disturb the performance.

Groups, the volunteer...
development group put forward a set of priorities that would be addressed by a sequence of incremental software releases.
A small group of testers began exercising version 1.14 in March 2013; this testing exposed several defects, all of which have been corrected. Testing then progressed to an open beta test period that allowed interested parties to download, install and try out this newest version of Trusted QSL.
The initial release in this sequence -- version 1.14 -- includes these new features:

Log files can be signed and uploaded over the internet to LoTW in one operation.

Errors in Station Locations are reported (for example, incorrect CQ and ITU zones).

QSOs that need not be re-submitted (“duplicates”) are brought to the user’s attention.

Error reporting has been improved.

Installation on Windows has been improved.

Users are notified when a new version becomes available.

Documentation has been improved.

Upgrading to version 1.14 is not mandatory, but is encouraged. Users who choose not to upgrade will not be able to access the new features in version 1.14, but they will still be able to upload logs into the LoTW system.

Zoos On The Air (ZOTA) is an event in which radio amateurs raise awareness of wildlife conservation by operating a radio station at a zoo, aquarium or wildlife park. The 2013 event will take place on Saturday, 25 May to coincide with British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA)’s Love Your Zoo Week.
Radio amateurs are invited to take part by ‘activating’ a zoo, aquarium, wildlife park or other conservation-related establishment.
The ZOTA event, like conservation and radio, is not limited by national boundaries and radio hams around the world are invited to participate in this event. Once stations have made arrangements with a zoo (or similar organisation) and chosen a callsign for the event, they can register here on the ZOTA website.
That was my first QSO on 30M via the mode called V4Chat. Actually my first attempt was one year ago on March of 2012, but it was really difficult to find out an active station on that rare mode. OM Dezider from Slovak Republic make it happen without having a sked who heared the odd sounding on the band and gave me an answer!!

MID-WEST, UNITED STATES — Within hours of South Korean news sources breaking a story that several Sang-Ho class submarines had disappeared from their North Korean bases, a ham radio operator named Tim, picked up a “numbers station” broadcasting on the same frequency as “The Voice of Korea” propaganda station. What makes this even more interesting is that at the tail end of the numbers transmission there was a long duration digital transmission as well.

So why is this important and alarming?

There are several reasons why this new development is particularly alarming. The first being...
the existence of the numbers station coming online shortly after the submarines put to sea, but more importantly is the digital transmission apparently tacked onto the end of the transmission and the ramifications of that transmission.

Numbers Station?

Throughout the Cold War numbers stations were used to convey encrypted messages to covert operatives. The station would come online broadcast a series of numbers, possibly multiple times, then disappear into the darkness. Those numbers were used as coded messages to be decrypted on the other end by the in country operative. Examples of these numbers stations can be found at The Conet Project Archives. So what makes this number station significant is the proximity in timing to the disappearance of the San-Ho class submarines, as well as the digital transmission. It is important to point out that the Sang-Ho submarines in question were effectively purpose built for covert insertion of small teams ofNorth Korean Maritime Commandos who are part of North Korea’s much lauded Special Operations Force. So at this moment there is a covert North Korean force apparently heading for South Korea.

The Sang-Ho submarines can carry as many as 30 commandos per submarines giving the current submarines a combined force of around 60 troops. Those 60 troops are specially trained to carry out behind enemy lines covert actions such as sabotage and assassinations. So in this case the numbers station was most likely broadcasting a special code to North Korean operatives to announce the impending arrival of the covert operations teams.

The Digital Transmission

What is more significant is the digital signal at the end of the transmission. Digital transmissions such as this one may indicate the presence of a burst transmission which contains a compressed and encrypted message bound for some covert force, somewhere. Typically a burst transmission is used to minimize the download time at the end point to prevent discovery. The unusual part of this potential burst transmission is being attached to a numbers station as well as the length and the power of the broadcast. Normal burst transmissions are in the one second to two second range. This transmission was in the 10 to 15 second range which is almost unheard of, unless the end point is a submarine.

The ham operator who picked up this particular transmission was located in the Midwest of the United States, and he reported the transmission was received 4 by 5 indicating a significant power was used to send the transmission. That level of power coupled with the length and possible submarine end point opens up a new and alarming tangent to this escalating conflict. It is important to point out that the numbers are being read in Spanish but that is typically done to confuse the original source of the transmission. In this case the transmission was detected on a upper side band of the AM range used by the Voice of Korea so while the numbers are Spanish the transmission does appear to originate in North Korea. That fact coupled with the missing submarines seems to provide evidence of the nature of the transmission despite being in Spanish. Its also important to note that the numbers being in Spanish could also be used to employ a different set of codes in the operatives code books.

Now the really alarming part, if the submarines and number station wasn’t alarming enough. One of the things that hasn’t been discussed in mainstream news is the fact that North Korea has between 22 to 24 diesel electric submarines of the Romeo Class. These subs, which are heavily antiquated and for the most part decommissioned, are capable of open ocean missions. They have also been successfully retrofitted to carry a small anti-ship cruise missile, actually six of those missiles and while the YJ-8, the missile used for those retrofits, is an anti-ship missile (similar to the Exocet in use) they could carry a conventional warhead used to hit a building, damage a runway or some other kind of ground based target. But its not beyond the pale to suggest that the warhead could be modified to carry a more interesting payload and it is important to remember that North Korea does have one of the largest chemical weapons stockpiles in the world. The submarine in question also has a range of over 9,000 miles but a top speed of 8 knots which is fairly slow. Its also a diesel so the submarine would would have to run on the surface to recharge batteries of let off exhaust from its engines which is a byproduct of their origin which was late war German U-Boats. Its also important to note that Romeo Class submarines which have been retrofitted must fire their missiles from the surface.
We don’t currently know if any of the Romeo Class submarines are missing, and if they are where they are going or even if they have been retrofitted but if they have then they represent a significant risk to Japan, Guam and even the western coast of the United States. As I said it’s impossible to know if that is the game plan but experts I consulted seem to believe that a burst of that size and power would be destined for a submarine be it Sang-Ho or Romeo Class.
All things being equal the transmission could have also been destined for the commando forces aboard the Sang-Ho submarines, which we know from news reports are at sea, or targeted for the operatives that will be meeting the covert operations teams on their arrival.
At this point we only have the transmission to go on, but its ramifications are both interesting and alarming at the same time. The transmission and the missing submarines also indicate a significant escalation in the deteriorating Korean political situation. Given the deadline North Korea has issued for embassies to shutdown and their staffs to depart we will soon find out.

Thanks again to Tim for finding this broadcast and bringing it to our attention, and as with all things like this please do your own research and come to your own conclusions. What I have provided here is just a few of the possible scenarios gleaned from research and the news of the day but it is by no means the only option. The information presented is fairly easy to find with some good keyword searching on your favorite search engine as well as the Wikipedia and FAS.org. So trust no one and make your own final decisions.
"If you are on 160 meters, or perhaps on 472 or 137 kHz, you may be interested in a new mode called JT9, designed especially for making QSOs on these bands. JT9 uses the structured messages introduced in 2003 for the JT65 mode, now widely used for EME and for QRP operations at HF. JT9 can operate at signal levels as low as -27 dB (in a 2500 Hz reference bandwidth), with one-minute timed transmissions. It also offers slower transmissions of 2, 5, 10 and 30 minutes duration, and the slowest mode can decode signals as weak as -40 dB. With one-minute transmissions, submode JT9-1 has a total bandwidth of 15.6 Hz -- less than one-tenth the bandwidth of a JT65A signal. The other submodes are narrower still: a JT9-30 signal occupies about 0.4 Hz total bandwidth.
He owns Certificate number 028 for the DXCC-25 Award, 007 for the DXCC-50 Award and 006 for the Worked All Europe Award. He also qualified for four Gridloc Hell Awards.

Today, he became the first FHC award winner for 2013, and the first for the WARC'n Overtime Award. He was issued a sweep of serial number 001 for the Bronze level Awards; 12 contacts on 12 Meters, 17 contacts on 17 Meters and 30 contacts on 30 Meters!
If you work Hellschreiber modes on the WARC bands, you know how few and far between contacts are. But, Costas persevered and accomplished an award I only dream about.
My hearty congratulations to you, Costas! Somehow, I have an idea I'll be seeing you back for the silver level awards soon!
